Cool, Cold, SNOW!!!

September 1st, 2010 1 Comment

If you haven’t noticed your calendars, well let me remind you that the “ber months” has just started. It’s September already and we all know that “ber months” mark the beginning of the cold season and Christmas. For temperate countries, it is expected that the temperature will drop greatly, soon, there will be snow and some bodies of water become skating rinks. That’s why peoples’ snow boots are readied so that when the time to have fun in snow has come, then everyone is ready to enjoy. I wish we had snow here but we can always visit the temperate regions. Nevertheless, snow is really fun!

The campaigns “Go Green” and “Go Organic” are some of the indications that people are starting to put value on natural ways, just like tradition. This is may also be one of the reasons why more and more herbal products are making their way to the market. Even food supplements and medications can now include herbal products. A lot of diet supplements now come as natural weight loss pills and many are so into it. The ingredients come from natural supplements and these products pass through a series of tests and certifications for it to be natural to eliminate consumers’ doubt about the product. Being natural is so cool.

Typhoon has struck the country. It was the worst typhoon that have brought the most rain water in the country causing inland water levels rise. After its aftermath, a typhoon followed a week after striking fear once again to those who were devastated by the typhoon. The appearances of these typhoons are caused by climate change according to others. But what can we do? As inhabitants of the earth, I think we have to do something.

I heard about Green shopping and how it can help us save the environment. I think its time that we take part in preventing the coming of something we do not want to happen. In our simple ways, let us help one another by saving what we treasure, the place we live, Earth.

Women…

June 1st, 2008 16 Comments

I have been observing women for some time now, especially my female housemates, their moods, their auras, and how they generally act from their day to day living. There are times when they get easily irritated while there are some moments when they seem to be very happy. Maybe this is due to some hormonal changes in their system. I really don’t know. Maybe it’s their progesterone but I’m not really sure. Are women really unpredictable?

My Allergy

April 26th, 2008 2 Comments

I woke up with allergic rhinitis greeting me “good morning!”. I realized that it has been a month already since I last changed my bedding! My bedding, since I only sleep on the floor for the lack of a better bed, has been harboring dusts and allergens since God knows when. Constant change of bedding is very important, especially to those people like me who have annoying nasal disturbances to deal with everyday.

Well, I already have plans to buy new sets of beddings. I have window-shopped last week and some lucky ones caught my attention which is set to be purchased in the next days or so. One material is made of cotton with a dreamy landscape print on it. It was so cute and I think, that would really give me a sense of a very good night sleep. Another one is a plain light yellow set, so bright it would definitely brighten your day once you wake up.

So I guess allergic rhinitis would not be a problem anymore once I get to have new beddings. A great wake up moment washes away all physical barriers that hinder me to have a great day ahead. It’s all in the power of the mind.

Plastics are known as one of the major culprits of pollution. Since they are non biodegradable, the plastic wastes are cumulative. Most consumers do not have enough idea or awareness on how to recycle and reuse plastic materials and this fact creates the bigger problem.

Nowadays, due to industrialization and commercialization, there has been a wide range of usage of plastics, from food containers to household products. In the article, the use of paper bags and other biodegradable containers for packaging dry goods and grocery items instead of the plastic bags is strictly imposed.

The concept of proper incentives is being applied here. A councilor said violators would be fined Php 5,000 or face one year in prison, and the business license of a company would also be automatically cancelled.

Based on our class discussion, one of the main causes of environmental degradation is the absence of a proper pricing scheme and markets for environmental assets and liabilities like pollution. With this fine or imprisonment, people will have an incentive to reduce pollution and use biodegradable packaging materials. What we need for this bill to be effective is strict law enforcement. There are many environmental protection laws but there are only few violators being caught. Authorities and police officers should be strict enough in the implementation of these policies and laws to encourage people to be environmentally aware. –ptd

An incentive is anything that motivates economic agents to behave in a certain way. Global warming and climate change are just few of the adverse effects of environmental degradation, which is perceived as a necessary consequence of economic growth. Also, the damage of the natural environment creates a threat on the lost of production and worse, on the collapse of the economic system. With this dilemma, economics can solve the problem of global warming and climate change through the use of proper incentives. Proper in the sense that we should give rewards rather than punishments because positive reinforcements are more effective in motivating people’s behavior, aside from the fact that violators are seldom being caught.

There is ‘Debt for Nature Swap’ which is an incentive for the developing countries. Instead of paying their debt to the developed countries, they will invest that money in their own country through environmental programs. In this way, it will not only benefit them but the world will also gain from their environmental awareness. On the other hand, business enterprises can also get incentives if they will shift to green technology. Nowadays, there is an increasing demand on environment friendly products and the producers can get the support of the consumers who will be providing them with incentives through greater market sales. The government can also provide incentives to the companies who follow environmental laws and policies such as reducing their taxes and promoting them to foreign investors for bigger investment opportunities. Also, the common people can also gain incentives if they will do solid waste management. People who throw their garbage will be reimbursed through tax deductions depending on the weight of the recyclables they throw away.

These incentives can greatly help solve the problem. However, incentives or economics per se can not do the job alone. We need the political will of everyone, especially of those countries who are among the main contributors of pollutants. There is an agreed limit of gas emissions per country and if one exceeds the limit, it will pay the price. With this, there are countries who can not afford to lessen their gas emission as it will affect their industry and they will rather pay the price, which is not that big compared to the loss in profit if they will reduce their gas emission, than sacrificing their economy. We should call for everyone’s cooperation since this is not only our world and the downside of these environmental problems will not only affect them, it will involve everybody. We also need proper implementation and monitoring of policies. The government should work hand in hand with the people through effective information dissemination, incentives and policies. –ptd

I have been thinking what it would be like if i would already be living in the so called “real world”… All i’m feeling is anticipation. I’m both excited and nervous to be living in that world soon (hopefully in a year). There have already been a lot of day-dreams/fantasies made in my mind.

Most of these day-dreams are constructed while i’m attending boring classes(which is almost everyday). I keep thinking that i would be accepted in a reputable company (and be given high compensation. hehe). I imagine myself driving my car(which i bought with my own money) to work and loving what i’m doing everyday. On paydays, i would buy some of the clothes that i like and the latest gadgets in the market. I would travel the world, it may be for business of for leisure. When i get home on my condo unit in manila, i would be welcomed by a gigantic LCD TV, with the newest game consoles underneath it. I would have a fridge filled with food, juices, and some alcoholic drinks.
